Using the Event Calendar

As you may have noticed, there has been a little event calendar on the site for the last few weeks. We've been ironing out some issues and there are still other elements that we may add in the future, but it is ready for folks to start making use of.

Event Calendar

You may have noticed that there is now an event calendar on the site.  There is a tab at the top of the site that will lead you to the calendar.  The idea is to provide a place where we can all see what events are happening in the sims and when.  With any luck, it will help the NPC managers book events in an intelligent way.
If you want to make use of one of the public spaces or are going to have an event in your own space--please contact Penguin (Megan) to make arrangements for booking/listing.

Site Outage Today

At approximately 9:30am MT our Web host's entire communications network (Internet, cell and phone) was taken off-line by a massive fiber cut that affected much of much of Taos. This is the largest communication outage Brownrice has seen in six years. Brownrice Internet utilizes triple-redundant internet connections to ensure reliabilty in the event that an upstream provider fails. However, these connections share one local fiber optic cable -- which was cut this morning.

Site Upgrade

This evening I upgraded the site to the latest version of Drupal and cleaned up a number of issues in the site's files that needed attention--removing old unused modules for example. Please let me know if you see anything that seems out of order by emailing me at matthew [at] dogstar [dot] org.

Thanks!

Drupal Basics-Setting Up A Local Install of Drupal on a Mac

Seeing as this site is a Drupal site, I thought our members might be interested in how to set up Drupal locally on a computer.

The first time I ever set up a local install of Drupal was a copy of 4.7.4.  I remember aspects of setting things up being a little convoluted.  5.x had not gone into full release--I believe it was in RC 1.  So there was no installer and it proved to be an interesting challenge.  With the advent of 5.x, things have become much simpler.  I'm going to describe how to set up a local install of Drupal 5.x on a Mac.

Drupal Basics-Feed Categories

I was asked by a good friend if I could merge the NPSL Offside Links and the Deli.cio.us NPSL links feeds into a single feed on nonprofitcommons.com in a block on the left side of the site. I took care of it this evening, and it is actually a piece of cake to do. These steps work in Drupal 5.x.

DOJ OKs Killing Net Neutrality

Imagine you and a friend are driving down the highway. Both of you are going the exact same speed and you are headed to the same Mall. On the way, you decide you are going to go to Sears and your friend decides that she wants to go to Barnes and Nobel--still at the same Mall. Mysteriously your car drops from 65 miles an hour to 35 miles an hour but your friend, she is still going full speed ahead.
